History

Curlew Crafts was established in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2025 with the aim of creating handmade craft items using sustainable fabrics from Scottish businesses. The company has evolved with a business ethos which has authentic local origins and inspirations. As well as producing good quality products, I strive to ensure that there are indirect benefits to buying from Curlew Crafts.

Curlew Crafts' business model means that product runs are short, and designs are subject to change, which keeps the company creative.

About Stephanie

I am from Northumberland, and my family were from the Northumbrian and Scottish Borders, although not affiliated to a clan. I lived in the Eastern Borders for 10 years, and have lived in Edinburgh through some interesting times, since 2018.

My varied work history has been a mixture of Costume Design in London, where I discovered my love of textiles, and Organic Growing in the Borders, which reflected my concerns for the environment, locally produced items, recycling and re-use. I spent over 5 years growing, making and selling, mainly at Farmer and Craft Markets in Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders and Northumberland.

When I lived in the Borders, I developed a deep love, both for the place, and for the traditional Scottish textiles produced there, so it feels good to incorporate Scottish textiles, particularly the Tartans and Tweeds which the country is famous for, into my work.

A Note about Tartans

Because the Scottish Collection uses remnants from premier textile mills and kilt makers in Scotland, these beautiful Tartans are not identified when I get them. Although I could spend time searching the Scottish Register of Tartans in order to identify them, this would unfortunately add to the price. I have therefore opted to try selling them as unidentified, with no disrespect towards the heritage intended. I would welcome any feedback about this.

If you are looking for a particular Clan, District or Company Tartan, or would like to create your own Tartan, it is best to deal with the suppliers or kilt shops directly. I am more than happy to recommend some of the best companies.
